Morocco stun Netherlands on penalties as Dutch shootout curse strikes again

Morocco produced a dramatic penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands in the Round of 32, extending the Dutch nation's infamous spot-kick nightmare and sending the Atlas Lions through to the last 16. The match at Estadio Monterrey ended 1-1 after 120 minutes of gripping, emotionally charged football before Morocco held their nerve from 12 yards to win 4-3 in the shootout.

The Netherlands struck first in the 72nd minute through an emotional Cody Gakpo. The forward, who had recently returned to the squad after the tragic loss of his unborn child, broke down in tears as his teammates rushed to celebrate with him. It was a poignant moment that seemed to set the Dutch on course for victory, as they controlled possession and looked comfortable heading into the final stages of regulation time.

However, Morocco refused to surrender. In the 91st minute, deep into stoppage time, substitute Chemsdine Talbi launched a long cross into the box, and Issa Diop rose highest to power a header past the Dutch goalkeeper, sending the Moroccan fans into raptures and forcing extra time. Neither side could find a winner in the additional 30 minutes, with both teams tiring and chances scarce, setting up a nerve-shredding penalty shootout.

For the Netherlands, this was familiar territory for all the wrong reasons. They have now lost six of their seven major tournament shootouts, a record that continues to haunt their World Cup campaigns. The shootout was a rollercoaster of missed opportunities. Teun Koopmeiners scored first for the Dutch, but Morocco's Neil El Aynaoui smashed his effort against the crossbar. Justin Kluivert then struck the post for the Netherlands, before Quinten Timber fired his attempt completely off target, giving Morocco the upper hand.

Morocco's goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, renowned for his penalty-saving prowess, made a crucial save from Crysencio Summerville to keep his side ahead. Although Achraf Hakimi hit the post for Morocco, it was Ismael Saibari who held his nerve to convert the winning penalty, sending the Atlas Lions into the Round of 16 and sparking wild celebrations among the Moroccan players and fans.

For the Netherlands, it is another early exit and more heartbreak from the penalty spot. Morocco, meanwhile, will now face Canada in the Round of 16, carrying the hopes of an entire continent.
